A doula understands that birth is a sacred experience that the mother will never forget. We support parents in their choices and do not judge, persuade or make decisions for them. We are there to give information and wisdom in preparation for birth and motherhood. In contrast to the medical staff present at a birth, we have built a relationship with the mother through her pregnancy, we are focused solely on her birth journey and are not subject to shift changes. During labour, we are there to provide continuous reassurance, encouragement and support. A doula has knowledge about the physiology and psychology of birth and knows what kind of support is needed during labour. We help with breathing, massage, relaxation and positioning techniques, but we are not medical professionals and do not perform clinical tasks such as examinations or foetal heart monitoring. We are there to give emotional support to both mother and partner to talk through any concerns or queries. We allow the partner to participate in the birth to their own comfort level, giving support when needed. We will assist in making birth preferences clear at the hospital, providing an objective viewpoint and helping the mother be heard. We are there to respect and work along side the medical staff and diffuse any confusion or conflict which may arise.
Clinical studies have been carried out to evaluate the difference a doula can make. The outcome has been so overwhelming that it has become known as “The Doula Effect”. The results have shown that mothers experienced:
Increased likelihood of spontaneous vaginal delivery
Shorter labour
Higher success with breast feeding
Increased sensitivity and ability to bond with their newborn
Less likelihood of giving birth by Caesarean Section
Reduction in the use of vacuum extraction or forceps
Less need for pain medication, including epidurals
A positive memory and overall feeling about their birth experience
Lower rates of Postnatal Depression
